Stale fuel, dirt, and debris are the most common cause of outdoor power equipment not starting or running properly. If you store equipment with untreated gas in the tank, it can lead to engine damage.

Your Mower Won't Start:

If you have last season's gas in your mower, drain your fuel tank and fill with fresh gas. Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace.

Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won't start. See your operator's manual for recommended spark plug change intervals. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly. An improper spark plug gap could lead to engine knocking and poor performance.

If the engine has proper maintenance, spark plug and oil changed every year, then it will last about 15–20 years. Always use Premium (no alcohol added) fuel. If you use regular fuel the carburetor might dry up and plug the many circuits in the carburetor.

Use carburetor cleaner to remove deposits, clogs & debris

Deposits inside the carburetor can clog fuel and air passages and reduce performance or stop the engine altogether. Luckily, you can take care of many of these problems quickly and easily; often without even removing the carburetor from the engine.

If the engine will not crank, you likely have a problem with... Discharged / defective battery or faulty electrical connections. To address these issues, check the battery and charging system for problems. Faulty parts: potentially the safety interlocks, starter motor switch (open circuit) or solenoid.

Inspect the Fuel System

An inadequate fuel supply can prevent your mower from starting. Check if there's enough fuel in the tank. Additionally, ensure that the fuel filter and fuel lines are not clogged. If your mower has been sitting for a while, stale fuel could also be the culprit.

The problem could be the age of the fuel in the tank, dirt or debris in the carburetor or an obstructed fuel tank vent. Other causes could be a fouled spark plug or a dirty or clogged fuel filter that restricts the amount of fuel getting to the carburetor.

What else could be a starting problem besides spark plugs? ›

The most common causes are problems in the ignition (for example, a bad ignition coil) or fuel system (for example, a clogged fuel filter). However, the source may also be a mechanical fault (for example, a leaking valve) or faulty components in other systems.
