FARMINGTON VALLEY NORTH CENTRAL "It will make for a much smoother crossing," said First Selectman Steven Wawruck. "It's long overdue." Siting Council To Hold Hearings On Line Upgrade SUFFIELD The Connecticut Siting Council is holding a series of public hearings on the proposed high-voltage power line upgrade from Bloomfield to Springfield, including one on June 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Suffield High School. The $714 million Greater Springfield Reliability Project would involve the construction of 345-kilovolt lines along existing easem*nts and is intended to increase power reliability throughout the region.

The public hearing is an opportunity for residents to give their views on the project. Connecticut Light Power has given the council several scenarios on where to place the power lines, though the siting council will make the final decision on where they go. Suffield and East Granby boards recommended last fall that consider putting the new lines underground. Residents have raised concerns about property values and health risks. Fundraiser Scheduled For Burn Camp In Union ENFIELD The Enfield Community Federal Credit Union is holding a family event on June 6 to raise money for the Arthur C.

Luf Children's Burn Camp in Union, a free summer camp for children with burn injuries. The credit union will donate proceeds from the event directly to the camp. Food will be sold, and there will be face-painting, raffles, balloons and a moon bounce. Mark Jordan, a member of the credit union, a former firefighter and a burn survivor, is organizing the event to raise money and awareness for the camp. The event will be from 10:30 a.m.

New Member Chosen To Serve On School Board FARMINGTON Jon Landry a member of the zoning board of appeals, has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the board of education. He replaces Ken Koos, who resigned earlier this month. "I'm honored to have been selected by the Republican Party and supported by the council to fill this vacancy," Landry said in a statement. "I look forward to working with the schools, students and their families to maintain the district's high national standing." Landry has two children, one of whom is a student at East Farms School. It's unclear whether he will have to step down from the zoning board.

Land Trust Hopes Plants Will Stop Invasives' Spread FARMINGTON The Farmington Land Trust has planted more than 1,000 plants and shrubs along the Farmington River in hopes of preventing the spread of invasive species such as poison ivy, barberry, bittersweet and privet. Three spots were planted with various plants, including crested iris, swamp azalea and swamp rose. Land trust member Joe Treggor said that one has a phytotoxin, a poison specific to plants, in its root system that might discourage the establishment of invasive species. The land trust will monitor the plantings for three years to determine their effectiveness. In the meantime, the site is open to the public.

Access is from the Waterville Road Aqueduct parking lot following the Henry Mason River Trail. Town To Seek Grant To Fix Bridge CANTON The board of selectmen has authorized town staff to apply for a grant that would help pay to rehabilitate a bridge built in 1895 that the state has said needs repair. The bridge crosses the Farmington River at Town Bridge Road. The scope of work has not been determined, and how much money the town might receive is also unclear. The state Department of Transportation said in March that the bridge has extensive rust and numerous cracks and that although it's safe, it should be fixed or replaced.

A preliminary study said that fixing the bridge would cost from $3 million to $7.5 million.
