FAQs
What kind of gas does a Briggs and Stratton 550 series take? ›
Use clean, fresh, unleaded petrol. Purchase fuel in a quantity that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel freshness and volatility tailored to the season. Do not mix oil with petrol. Always treat new fuel with stabilizer to protect your equipment throughout the season.
How much oil does a Briggs and Stratton 550e take? ›15 oz. of oil is required for the 550e Series engine (2200 PSI Pressure Washer).
What is the most common reason why a Briggs & Stratton small engine wont run correctly? ›A common issue is a clogged carburetor from stale gas. Using a fuel stabilizer keeps fuel fresh and the carburetor from gumming and varnishing. Third step, check the ignition system with a spark tester. Step four, replace the spark plug and reconnect the spark plug wire.
How many horsepower is a Briggs & Stratton 550? ›3.5 Gross HP
Only 3 products can be compared at once.
A minimum 87 octane containing up to 10% ethanol is recommended. Do not use fuels with 15 to 85% ethanol, these fuels are not approved for use in small engines. Mixing oil with gasoline or modifying your 4-Cycle small engine to run on alternative fuels will damage the engine and will not be covered under warranty.
Can I put 87 gas in my lawn mower? ›A minimum of 87 octane/87 AKI (91 RON); If operating at high altitude, see below. Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), is acceptable. Some fuel stations are now selling gasoline with up to 15% ethanol.
Can I use 10w30 instead of sae 30 in my lawn mower? ›Small Engine Oil Type Recommendations:
Use SAE 30 in warmer temperatures of 40° F and higher (5° C and higher) Use SAE 10W-30 for a varying temperature range of 0 to 100° F (-18 to 38° C), this grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80° F(27° C) or higher.
We have modified our engine oil recommendations to state that you may now use a synthetic 5W30 or 15W50 oil in all temperature ranges. We recommend the use of Briggs & Stratton Synthetic Oil.
Can I use car oil in my lawn mower? ›If you run a motor vehicle oil in your lawn mower, it will run as usual. However, the heavy lubrication will significantly increase the wear.
What is the life expectancy of a Briggs and Stratton engine? ›If the engine has proper maintenance, spark plug and oil changed every year, then it will last about 15–20 years. Always use Premium (no alcohol added) fuel. If you use regular fuel the carburetor might dry up and plug the many circuits in the carburetor.
What kind of oil for Briggs and Stratton 550 series? ›
For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50 hours of use (whichever comes first). Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of our engines. Check oil level regularly.
Is Briggs and Stratton a good engine? ›Briggs & Stratton has been around as long as small engines have been built. They have a reputation that is unmatched and true to that reputation they delivered on my expectation. Out of the box, add oil and gas, started on the first pull and I was in business.
What fuel does Briggs and Stratton engine use? ›Always use clean, fresh, unleaded petrol with an octane rating of at least 77 for side-valve engines or at least 85 for overhead-valve engines. We recommend the use of Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit® petrol stabilizer to keep fuel fresh and clean.
How to tell if a lawn mower is 2 or 4 stroke? ›A 2-cycle engine has one fill port with a cap that has fuel pump and oil can icon. The cap will usually state the oil to fuel mix ratio. A 4-cycle engine has two fill ports with each cap separately identifying the fuel tank from the oil sump.
What kind of gas does a Briggs and Stratton pressure washer use? ›Use fresh, unleaded fuel with an E10 blend or less
An E10 fuel is a blend of unleaded gasoline and up to 10 percent ethanol. Higher ethanol blends such as E15 or E85 can corrode metal parts and degrade plastic components within small engines—which can cause poor engine starting and even engine failure.
The best fuel for 4 cycle engines is ethanol free. Even though ethanol free fuel does not deteriorate carburetors like gas with ethanol, we strongly recommend, running the engine until the tank is out of gas, so only put into the tank the amount of gas you feel you will use.
